வாஷிங்டன்: திருமணம் செய்து கொள்வதற்கு முன்பே காதலர்கள் தம்பதிகளாக வாழ்க்கை நடத்தத் தொடங்கிவிடுவது, மண வாழ்க்கையில் பாதிப்பை ஏற்படுத்துவதாக அமெரிக்க ஆய்வு ஒன்று தெரிவிக்கிறது.

மேற்கத்திய நாடுகளில் 'லிவிங் டுகெதர்' என்ற வாழ்க்கை முறை வெகுவாக காணப்படுகிறது. அதாவது, திருமணம் செய்து கொள்வதற்கு முன்பாகவே கணவன் - மனைவியாக ஒரே வீட்டில் வாழும் முறை.

இத்தகைய வாழ்க்கை முறையை, திருமண வாழ்க்கைக்கு முன்னோட்டமாகவே அவர்களில் பெரும்பாலானோர் கருதுகின்றனர்.

அத்துடன், திருமணத்துக்குப் பிறகு தம்பதிகளாக உடல் ரீதியாக உறவை வலுத்துப்படுத்துபவர்களைக் காட்டிலும், திருமணதுக்கு முன்பே உறவில் ஈடுபடுபவர்களுக்கு திருமண வாழ்க்கை பெரும்பாலும் திருப்தி தருவதில்லை என்று அந்த ஆய்வின் மூலம் தெரிய வருகிறது.

பொருளாதாரத்தில் நட்புணர்வுடனும், மக்களின் மகிழ்ச்சிகரமான வாழ்க்கையையும் அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டே இந்தப் பட்டியல் தயாரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

மேலும், வாழ்க்கைத் தரம், வாழ்க்கையில் பொருளாதாரம் உள்ளிட்ட எதிர்பார்ப்புகள் மற்றும் வாழ்க்கையில் திருப்தி போன்றவற்றையும் கொண்டு தரப் பட்டியல் மதிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.

ஜம்மு காஷ்மீர் மாநிலம் முஸ்லிம்கள் அதிகம் வசிக்கும் மாநிலமாகும். இதன் காரமாகவே இங்குள்ள பிரிவினைவாத சக்திகள் தனி நாடு கோரிக்கையை வலியுறுத்தி போராட்டங்களை நடத்தி வருகின்றனர். மேலும் இங்குள்ள காஷ்மீரி பண்டிட்களும் உயிருக்கு பயந்து ஜம்முவில் அகதிகளாக வசித்து வருகின்றனர்.

இந்த நிலையில் இங்குள்ள மாமலாகா கோயிலில் முகம்மது அப்துல்லா மற்றும் குலாம் ஹசன் ஆகிய இரண்டு இஸ்லாமியர்கள் தற்போது கோயில் குருக்களாக இருந்து நாள்தோறும் பூiஜ செய்து வருகின்றனர்.

MOTHER DECAPITATES NEWBORN; EATS PIECES OF HIS BODY

Tue, Jul 28, 2009 AFP, Chicago – A Texas woman decapitated her newborn baby and ate pieces of his body before turning a knife on herself, police said Monday. The woman was covered in blood and screaming: "I killed my baby, I want to die" when police arrived at the modest San Antonio home.

"She mentioned that someone or something told her to do it and she was hearing voices, so that leads us to believe she was experiencing some kind of mental crisis," said police spokesman Joe Rios.

The woman had separated from the baby’s father about a week earlier and was living with her mother and sister, who were helping to care for the baby born on June 30. The woman was discovered around 4.30 am Sunday by her mother, who found her holding the decapitated baby.

She appeared to have ingested parts of her child after attacking him with a knife, Rios said. "She was biting on the head," Rios told AFP. Otty Sanchez, 33, was charged with capital murder and remained in hospital Monday.

VARANASI, India (AFP) – The longest solar eclipse of the 21st century plunged millions across Asia into temporary darkness on Wednesday, triggering scenes of religious fervour, fear and excitement in India and China.

Ancient superstition and modern commerce came together in what was likely to end up being the most watched eclipse in history, due to its path over Earth's most densely inhabited areas.

A woman was killed in a stampede in the holy city of Varanasi where tens of thousands of devout Hindus had crowded the river Ganges at dawn.

Police said the 80-year-old fainted in the crush to enter a temple near the banks of the river and suffocated, triggering panic. More than 20 people were injured.

With Hindu priests conducting special prayers, the crowds in Varanasi cheered and then raised their arms in salutation as the sun re-emerged from behind the moon, before they took a spiritually purifying dip in the river's holy waters.

A total solar eclipse usually occurs every 18 months or so, but Wednesday's spectacle was special for its maximum period of "totality" -- when the sun is wholly covered by the moon -- of six minutes and 39 seconds.

Such a lengthy duration will not be matched until the year 2132.

State-run China Central Television provided minute-by-minute coverage of what it dubbed "The Great Yangtze River Solar Eclipse" as the phenomenon cut a path along the river's drainage basin.

Millions of people in areas of southwestern China enjoyed a clear line of sight, according to images broadcast on CCTV, but the view was obstructed along much of its path by cloudy weather.

Shanghai viewers braved rain and overcast skies to witness the spectacle as darkness shrouded China's commercial hub at 9:36 am (0136 GMT).

"It's like magic, the day turns into night in such a short period of time ... I have no idea where I am right now. It feels like a different world," said Chen Hong, a biotech company chief executive.

Despite the weather, hotels along Shanghai's famed waterfront Bund packed in the customers with eclipse breakfast specials.

Those who could afford it grabbed expensive seats on planes chartered by specialist travel agencies that promised extended views of the eclipse as they chased the shadow eastwards.

The cone-shaped shadow, or umbra, created by the total eclipse first made landfall on the western Indian state of Gujarat shortly before 6:30 am (0100 GMT).

It then raced across India and squeezed between Bangladesh and Nepal before engulfing most of Bhutan, traversing the Chinese mainland and slipping back out to sea off Shanghai.

From there it moved across the islands of southern Japan and veered into the western Pacific.

In Mumbai, hundreds of people who trekked up to the Nehru planetarium clutching eclipse sunglasses found themselves reaching for umbrellas and rain jackets instead as heavy overnight rain turned torrential.

"We didn't want to watch it on television and we thought this would be the best place," said 19-year-old student Dwayne Fernandes. "We could've stayed in bed."

Many did stay home, fearful of the effects of the lunar shadow which some believe can lead to birth defects in pregnant women.

"I was advised not to leave the house as the eclipse brings bad luck to you and your family," said Deepa Shrestha, a 25-year-old housemaid in Kathmandu.

Superstition has always haunted the moment when Earth, moon and sun are perfectly aligned. The daytime extinction of the sun, the source of all life, is associated with war, famine, flood and the death or birth of rulers.

The ancient Chinese blamed a sun-eating dragon. In Hindu mythology, the two demons Rahu and Ketu are said to "swallow" the sun during eclipses, snuffing out its light and causing food to become inedible and water undrinkable.

Some Indian astrologers had issued predictions laden with gloom and foreboding, and a gynaecologist at a Delhi hospital said many expectant mothers scheduled for July 22 caesarian deliveries insisted on changing the date.

The last total solar eclipse was on August 1 last year and also crossed China.

The next will be on July 11, 2010, but will occur almost entirely over the South Pacific.

Tears and tributes mark MJ's farewell

A gold-plated casket bearing Michael Jackson took center stage on Tuesday as hundreds of millions worldwide bade farewell to the King of Pop in the final curtain call of his glittering career.

MCPXTears and tributes flowed as mourners including rock stars and athletes gathered at the Staples Center in Los Angeles for a star-studded but somber celebration of the music icon's turbulent life and times.

Jackson's 11-year-old daughter Paris tearfully addressed mourners in the heart-breaking last act of the two-hour service.

"Ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine. And I just wanted to say I love him so much," she said before dissolving into tears and being comforted by Jackson's sister, Janet.

Jackson's poignant journey began with a private service shortly after 8:15am (1515 GMT) as family and friends gathered at the picturesque Forest Lawn mortuary high in the Hollywood Hills.

Jackson's golden casket, swathed with red flowers, then emerged and was loaded into a black hearse under the watchful eye of 20 media helicopters hovering overhead.

A motorcade of luxury vehicles then made a stately procession to the 20,000-capacity arena, where family, friends and celebrities rubbed shoulders with ordinary fans who had won tickets via an online lottery.

Jackson's casket was placed at the front of the stage as the service began with singer Smokey Robinson reading letters of condolence from those unable to attend, including a tribute from former South African president Nelson Mandela.

"Michael was a giant and a legend in the music industry. And we mourn with the millions of fans worldwide," Mandela's tribute read.

Motown diva Diana Ross - named by Jackson in his will as an alternative guardian to his children - meanwhile said she had chosen to mourn privately.

"Michael was a personal love of mine, a treasured part of my world, part of the fabric of my life," Ross's tribute said. "Michael wanted me to be there for his children, and I will be there if they ever need me."

Ross was one of several notable absentees, with Jackson's long-time friend Elizabeth Taylor also opting to stay away.

"I just don't believe that Michael would want me to share my grief with millions of others. How I feel is between us. Not a public event," Taylor said in a message on the Twitter micro-blogging site.

Tributes to Jackson from friends and associates were punctuated by performances from Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder and Jennifer Hudson amongst others as Jackson's family looked on approvingly. Jackson's brothers all wore matching suits and their sibling's signature solo sequined glove.

One of the biggest ovations came after rousing remarks by reverend Al Sharpton who told Jackson's children to disregard the lurid stories that often swirled around their father.

"I want his three children to know - there weren't nothing strange about your daddy," Sharpton said. "It was strange what your daddy had to deal with but he dealt with it."

The service drew to a close with a performance of Jackson's clarion call to end global suffering, "Heal the World," before members of the star's family offered individual tributes.

As the service ended it was not immediately clear where Jackson was to be buried.

Fans meanwhile were left praising the execution of the memorial service, saying it had struck the right tone.

"It was very fitting. It was a celebration, yet it was humble," said Wayne Darrington, 20.

Streets surrounding the Staples Center had been sealed off before dawn where thousands of police officers were deployed to guard against large crowds of ticketless fans.

A live feed of the service was made available free to television networks, while the event was being streamed via social networking websites Facebook and MySpace, officials said.

Fans gathered to sing Jackson's greatest hits and watch his videos ahead of the event in cities across the globe such as Tokyo, Hong Kong and Berlin.

Obama pays tribute


US President Barack Obama meanwhile told CNN in an interview from Russia that Jackson was "one of the greatest entertainers of our generation."

"I think like Elvis, like (Frank) Sinatra, like the Beatles, he became a core part of our culture," Obama said, acknowledging the "tragedy" that was a part of the singer's life.

Jackson sold more than 750 million albums during a four-decade career that was ultimately overshadowed by repeated allegations of child abuse, his startling physical transformation and eccentric behavior.

Local and federal law enforcement agencies continue to probe the circumstances of his death on June 25 at the age of 50.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's office has said it will not issue a final cause of death for "several weeks" when the results of exhaustive toxicology tests are known.

Lawyers meanwhile are busy untangling the labyrinth of legal issues that have emerged in the aftermath of Jackson's death.

On Monday, a Los Angeles judge replaced Jackson's mother as temporary administrator of his estate with two of the pop icon's business associates, as instructed by a 2002 will.
