Price hikes can make a country sick

NEW At the stroke of midnight, a “thief” crept into the homes of all Malaysians while they were sound asleep. He did not intend to steal their material possessions. He did worse – he left a note on their breakfast table, which shook them up the next day. They read: “Sugar up! Petrol up! Diesel up! Natural gas up!” Unbeknown to them, the man who stays in Putrajaya was working overtime on this piece of bad news and had surreptitiously delivered the blow at a time when most people are in slumber land. But some got wind of his secret intention – they rushed to the petrol stations and joined the long queue to fill up their tanks.

Yes, the prime minister had hinted sometime ago that the people must be prepared for subsidy cuts and the consequent side-effects. Even one of his ministers had warned that the country would go bankrupt if the subsidy crutch is not removed. The leaders were softening us up before moving in for the kill. But the timing of their “attack” was heartless. With Hari Raya around the corner, they dropped the bombs and snuffed out the lights of joy.

We have no quarrel with the government's aim to save money from the subsidy cuts. The savings is huge – RM750 million a year. But the government has not been thrifty with its spending. Billions of ringgit had gone down the drain because of mismanagement and the greed for money. Even the RM750 million will disappear into the black hole in no time. Trimming down the subsidy fats is not the answer to a strong and healthy nation. The millions saved will not make us leaner simply because a spendthrift government, long in power and awashed with so many sins, cannot and will not change its bad ways.

When the New Economic Model was thrust onto the public stage, there was general consternation. The new-born baby was not even brought to parliament for a ritual of debate and confirmation. It came into the world bawling for attention but the citizens paid little heed to it. Likewise, there was no debate about the intended price hikes or consultation with the man in the street. Instead, the whole bundle was dumped on us with the cynical remark that a rise in the price of sugar will set you free from the clutches of diabetes. It is not a sweet reasoning; it is ludicrous and ill-thought.

In a democracy, nothing must be kept in the closet. All matters of national importance must be aired openly. Everyone has the right to know what is good for them. But the prime minister of Malaysia wants to operate deep down the bunker where plans are forged on the anvil of secrecy. It seems that there is an official price schedule kept closely to the premier's chest in which is laid out plans for additional increases in the price of sugar, cooking gas and other consumer products. Why isn't the prime minister telling us about it? Why keep mum when he knows full well that inflation rates will soar if he continues with another round of price hikes?

Malaysians are a mature lot. It insults their intelligence when spurious arguments are used to advance a national agenda. It angers them when steps are taken in a cloak-and-dagger manner. It riles them when leaders talked with a forked tongue as they mould the destiny of the country. Ordinary people who daily wage a battle to survive may not understand the complexities of economic management, but they do feel acutely the effects of ill-conceived plans. It is not rocket science to know that when prices go up, the country is in deep trouble. Then the prime minister cannot tell the people to eat bread because the price of a loaf is too high.

அல்லாஹ் யாருக்கு சொந்தம்?

மலேசியா உச்ச நீதிமன்றத்திற்கு ஒரு விசித்திரமான வழக்கு வந்தது. கிறிஸ்தவர்களும் "அல்லாஹ்" என்ற சொல்லை பாவிக்கலாமா? என்பதே அந்த வழக்கு. மலேசியாவில் முஸ்லிம் அல்லாத பிற மதத்தவர்கள் "அல்லாஹ்" என்ற சொல்லை பாவிக்க தடை இருந்தது. மலே கத்தோலிக்கர்களின் பத்திரிகையான "ஹெரால்ட்", அந்த தடையை மீறியிருந்தது. குறிப்பாக மலே மொழி பேசும் கிறிஸ்தவ சிறுபான்மையினரை பிரதிநிதித்துவப் படுத்திய அந்தப் பத்திரிகை நீதிமன்றுக்கு இழுக்கப்பட்டது. வாதங்களை விசாரித்த நீதிபதி, அல்லாஹ் என்ற வார்த்தையை கிறிஸ்தவர்களும் பயன்படுத்தலாம் என தீர்ப்பளித்தார். இஸ்லாமிய மத அடிப்படைவாதக் குழுக்கள், தீர்ப்பை ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள மறுத்தன. "அல்லாஹ் முஸ்லிம்களுக்கே மட்டுமே சொந்தம்." என உரிமை கொண்டாடின. கோலாலம்பூர் நகரில் சில கிறிஸ்தவ தேவாலயங்கள் எரிக்கப்பட்டன. தேவாலயங்கள் மீதான வன்முறையை எதிர்ப்பதாக கூறிய மலேசிய பிரதமர், "அல்லாஹ் மீதான தடையை" ஆதரித்து பேசினார்.

அல்லாஹ் என்பது முஸ்லிம்களின் கடவுளை (மட்டும்) குறிக்கும் என்று தான், பிற மதத்தவர்கள் அப்பாவித்தனமாக நம்புகின்றார்கள். சில முஸ்லிம் பாமரர்களும், மத அடிப்படைவாதிகளும் அல்லாஹ் என்ற வார்த்தையை ஒரு முஸ்லிம் மட்டுமே உச்சரிக்க முடியும் என வாதிடுகின்றனர். இது ஒரு வகையில் "இறைவனைத் தவிர வேறெந்த இறைவனும் இல்லை" என்ற திருக் குர் ஆனின் அடிப்படைக்கு முரணானது. "இறைவன் ஒருவனே" எனில், அது உலகமாந்தர் அனைவருக்கும் பொதுவான இறைவனையே சுட்டி நிற்கும். அது போலத்தான், "அஸ்ஸலாமு அழைக்கும்" (உங்களுக்கு சமாதானம் உண்டாவதாக) என்ற அரபு சொற் தொடரையும் முஸ்லிம்கள் மட்டுமே கூற வேண்டும் என அடம் பிடிப்பவர்களைக் காணலாம்.

இஸ்லாமிய மதம் அரபு மொழியை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டது. திருக்குர்-ஆன் அரபு மொழியில் மட்டுமே கற்பிக்கப்படுகின்றது. (மொழிபெயர்ப்புகள் இருந்த போதிலும், இஸ்லாமிய மாணவர்கள் மூல மொழியிலான அரபிலேயே படிக்கின்றனர்.) இஸ்லாமியப் படையெடுப்புகள் ஈராக் வரையிலான மக்களை அரபு மொழி பேசுவோராக மாற்றின. இருப்பினும் ஈரானுக்கு அப்பால், அரபு மொழி மத அனுஷ்டானங்களுடன் மட்டும் நின்று விட்டது. சாதாரண மக்களின் பேச்சு மொழியாக மாறவில்லை. இருப்பினும் முஸ்லீமாக மக்கள், சில அரபுச் சொற்களை தமது பெயர்களிலும், அன்றாட பேச்சு வழக்கிலும் சேர்த்துக் கொண்டனர். அவ்வாறு தான், அல்லாஹ் என்ற அரபுச் சொல், முஸ்லிம்களின் கடவுளைக் குறிக்கும் என்ற தப்பபிப்பிராயம் தோன்றலாயிற்று.

தமிழர்கள் "கடவுள், இறைவன், ஆண்டவன்" என்று சொன்னார்கள். சமஸ்கிருதக்காரர்கள் "பகவான்" என்றார்கள். ஆங்கிலேயர்கள் "God " என்றார்கள். பிரெஞ்சுக்காரர்கள் "Dieu " என்றார்கள். அவ்வாறே அரபு மொழி பேசுவோர் "அல்லாஹ்" என்றார்கள். அரபு மொழியில் "இலாஹ்" என்ற பெயர்ச் சொல்லுடன், அல் என்ற விகுதி சேர்ந்து அல்லாஹ் என்றானது. அது இஸ்லாம் மதம் தோன்றுவதற்கு முன்பிருந்தே பாவனையில் இருந்துள்ளது. அரேபியாவில் வாழ்ந்த மக்கள், வேறெந்த பெயரில் கடவுளை அழைத்திருப்பார்கள்? ஒரு வேளை அவர்கள் கிறிஸ்தவர்களாக இருந்திருந்தால்?

சவூதி அரேபியாவில், ஜுபைல் நகருக்கு கிழக்கே உள்ள பாலைவனத்தில், உலகிலேயே மிகப் பழமையான கிறிஸ்தவ தேவாலயம் உள்ளது. அனேகமாக கி.பி. நான்காம் நூற்றாண்டில் வாழ்ந்த அரேபிய கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் வழிபட்ட ஸ்தலமாக இருக்கலாம். இன்று அந்த இடத்திற்கு எந்த ஆராய்ச்சியாளரும் செல்லாதபடி, சுற்றி வர வேலியிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. (சவூதி) அரேபிய மக்கள் ஒரு காலத்தில் கிறிஸ்தவர்களாக இருந்த உண்மையை, இன்றைய ஆட்சியாளர்கள் ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள மாட்டார்கள். அவர்களைப் பொறுத்த வரை, அரேபிய மக்கள் பல தெய்வ வழிபாட்டில் இருந்து விலகி இஸ்லாமைத் தழுவியவர்கள். மெக்காவிலும், வேறு பல அரேபிய பிரதேசங்களிலும் பல தெய்வ வழிபாடு நிலவியது உண்மை தான். இருப்பினும் அயல் நாடுகளில் கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் வாழ்ந்ததற்கான சரித்திர சான்றுகள் உள்ளன. இன்றைய சிரியா, ஜோர்டான், யேமன், ஓமான் நாட்டு மக்களின் முன்னோர்கள் கிறிஸ்தவர்களாக இருந்தவர்கள்.

அந்த நாடுகளின் மக்கள் ஏதோ ஒரு வகை அரபு மொழியை பேசியவர்கள். அதை வட்டார வழக்கு மொழி எனலாம், அல்லது அரபு போலத் தோன்றும் இன்னொரு மொழி எனலாம். இறைதூதர் முகமது நபிகள் தலைமை தாங்கிய இஸ்லாமியப் படைகளின் வெற்றிக்கு அந்த மக்களின் ஒத்துழைப்பு கிடைத்தது. இதற்கு மொழி ஒற்றுமை ஒரு காரணியாக இருந்திருக்கலாம். அதுவே பின்னர் அந்தப் பிரதேச மக்கள் அனைவரும் இஸ்லாமியராக மாற ஊக்குவித்திருக்கலாம். ஒரு முக்கிய காரணம் மட்டும் இஸ்லாமியரின் வரலாற்று நூலில் பதியப் பட்டுள்ளது. முஸ்லிம்கள் அல்லாதோர் அதிக வரி செலுத்த வேண்டியிருந்தது. இந்த வரிச் சுமை காரணமாகவே பலர் இஸ்லாமிய மதத்தை தழுவிக் கொண்டனர். அந்த வரி அறவிடும் முறை இன்றும் மலேசியாவில் பின்பற்றப் படுகின்றது. மலேசியாவில் கிறிஸ்தவர்களும், இந்துக்களும், பௌத்தர்களும் பிரத்தியேக வரி கட்டிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். பிற மதத்தவர் கட்டும் வரியைக் கொண்டு, ஏழை மலே முஸ்லிம்களிற்கு சலுகை செய்து கொடுக்கப்படுகின்றது.

பண்டைக் கால அரபு இஸ்லாமியர்கள், கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் மீது அதிக வரி செலுத்திய போதிலும், அவர்களை கட்டாயமாக மதமாற்றம் செய்யவில்லை. கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் தமது மத வழிபாட்டை இடையூறின்றி தொடர முடிந்தது. அதனால் தான் இன்றைக்கும் ஈராக், லெபனான், எகிப்து ஆகிய நாடுகளில் கணிசமான அளவு கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் வாழ்கின்றனர். அந்த நாடுகளைச் சேர்ந்த கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் அனைவருக்கும் அரபு தான் தாய்மொழி. அவர்கள் தாம் கடவுளாக வணங்கும் இயேசுவை எப்படி அழைப்பார்கள்? "அல்லாஹ்" என்றழைக்காமல் வேறு எப்படி அழைப்பது? இத்தாலிக்கு தெற்கே இருக்கும் சிறிய தீவு, மால்ட்டா. அந்த தேசத்து மக்கள் மால்ட்டீஸ் மொழி பேசும் கத்தோலிக்க கிறிஸ்தவர்கள். அவர்கள் தமது பாஷையில் கடவுளை "அல்லா" என்று அழைக்கிறார்கள்.அதற்கு காரணம், மால்ட்டா தேச மக்களின் மூதாதையர், ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் அரபு நாடுகளில் இருந்து வந்து குடியேறியவர்கள். மால்ட்டீஸ் மொழி கிட்டத்தட்ட அரபு மொழி போன்றிருக்கும்.
மலேசியாவில் இன்று அல்லாஹ் என்ற வார்த்தையை வைத்து எழுந்துள்ள சச்சரவு மொழி சார்ந்ததல்ல. அது இனப் பிரச்சினையின் இன்னொரு பரிமாணம். மலேசியாவில் 60 வீதமான மக்கள் மலே மொழி பேசுவோர். (முஸ்லிம்கள்) ஆட்சி அதிகாரம் அவர்கள் கைகளில் தான் உள்ளது. மீதி 40 வீதமான மக்கள், சீனர்கள், இந்தியர்கள், மற்றும் பழங்குடியினர். அவர்களில் பௌத்த, இந்து, கிறிஸ்தவ மதங்களை பின்பற்றுவோர் அதிகம். இந்த விகிதாசாரப் பிரதிநிதித்துவம் மலேசிய அரசை கலங்க வைத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது. அரசுப் பணிகளில் இருந்து புறக்கணிக்கப்படும் சீனர்களும், இந்தியர்களும் தனியார் துறையில் கோலோச்சுகின்றனர். மலேசியா கடந்த காலங்களில் இந்தியர்களுக்கும், சீனர்களுக்கும் எதிரான கலவரங்களை கண்டுள்ளது. இப்போது கிறிஸ்தவர்களுக்கு எதிரான மதம் சார்ந்த கலவரம். என்ன விலை கொடுத்தேனும், மலேசிய அரசு இஸ்லாமிய-மலே பேரினவாதத்தை பாதுகாக்கத் துடிக்கின்றது. (பிரிட்டிஷ் காலத்தில்) வந்தேறுகுடிகளான சீனர்களையும், இந்தியர்களையும் ஒதுக்க நினைத்தாலும், கூடி வாழ வேண்டிய கசப்பான நிலைமை. பின்-காலனித்துவ மலேசியா அரசியல், தவிர்க்கவியலாது மதம், மொழி, இனம் சார்ந்த கலவையாகி விட்டது. இந்த அரசியல் சித்து விளையாட்டுக்குள் "அல்லாஹ்" படும் பாடு, பார்க்க சகிக்கவில்லை. பாவம், அவரை விட்டு விடுங்கள்.

Tamil Nesan, MIC and Samy Velu

In Their Own Pandora

One word sums up it all. Both the party and it’s leader is irrelevant, a word made famous during sodomy 1 trials by Judge, the late Augustine Paul.

MIC and Samy appear to live in their own world. While I know for sure that the GAS movement will not have impact on him, I am baffled that Samy is ignorant of numerous show of disgust by fellow Indians in the country. Only someone with thick skin can endure such abuses and insults throughout the country, not just by Indians but also by other races who are equally baffled that this unwanted leader is still around, helming the party when most of his contemporaries have retired and even some are resting in peace.

What is more baffling is that MIC members, who appear to share the same planet as Samy, still believe in Samy and still thinks MIC is relevant to the Indian community.
When Kamalanathan won the Hulu Selangor parliament seat, it make them big headed and more convinced that MIC is relevant when everyone knows that the Indian votes had hardly returned to BN. It was the Malays who won it for Kamalanathan.

Samy Vellu’s claims of 600,000 membership of MIC are all a sham. MIC branch leaders open branches by getting copies of identity card of Indians all over their area. Branch leaders pay the membership fees and maintain the records to keep their branches active.
Only the old guards, who have benefited directly from Samy Velu are still supporting and worshipping him, perhaps also due to the fact that Samy also means ‘God” .

My estimate is MIC has only about less than 50,000 hardcore supporters or rather Samy cult followers.

Tamil Nesan

Since the emergence of GAS movement, MIC’s family owned paper, Tamil Nesan, went on the offensive with numerous declaration of support for Samy Vellu by various state, divisional and branch chairman, who appear to revere Samy as a king or even god.

Numerous lies are propagated by the newspaper, whose Managing Director is none other than MIC’s prince, Vel Paari. Even on Monday, 31st May, the front page had a huge picture of an almost empty hall in Mines, where the GAS event was held. The report says that hardly 2000 people turned up and most of whom who turned up was Indian Nationals and Indonesians who works for Klang based businessman, Ohms Thiagarajan.

A quick glance at other newspapers in newsstands tells you a completely different story. The hall was full at about 4pm and even one can see a full turnout from the prime time news in TV. Who is Tamil Nesan trying to fool. Tamil Nesan thinks that the Indians are an ignorant lot and will believe what it says. The newspaper is now helmed by a reporter who was jailed before for defaming Samy Vellu. Now this man is using Tamil Nesan to slam Samy’s detractors. How ironic and things change when people develop thick skin like Samy. Maybe money and survival make people work for their one time enemy.

Tamil Nesan also published several sponsored full page advertisements of Birthday wishes for Samy’s wife Indrani. If anyone reads the wishes narrated, one would believe that Indrani is bigger than Queen Elizabeth or Mother Theresa combined. Never before I have seen people sucking up to irrelevant leaders and their wifes in such a way. Indrani has been described as 1st lady, model mother (to Vel Paari, yucks), model woman, holier than thou person etc. It was sickening to read such things when the whole of Malaysia knows that Indrani is nothing but another politician wife.

Tamil Nesan has no worthy news to offer, their front pages are either dedicated to glorifying MIC leaders, Samy or his son Vel Paari, or their partner in crime, youth leader or rather Youth ‘liar’, T.Mohan. Front page are also often dedicated to slam ex-deputy, Dato S. Subramaniam and other critics. It has the lowest circulation amongst Tamil dailies and I believe only hardcore Samy supporters buy the paper.

Other MIC Leaders

I am equally baffled with the silence from other MIC leaders. They should know by now that nobody supports MIC and their leaders. Either they are deaf or dumb enough not to realise this. Their leaders have also not learn their lessons. During the Hulu Selangor by elections, MIC leaders have yet to fulfill many of their promises. Some tried to misappropriate funds given by BN, some gave worthless cheques while some purposely wrote incorrect names in the cheques, causing cheques to be returned. People in Hulu Selangor is more disgusted with MIC now.

This is a one man party and most of those in CWC owe Samy a lot for their current position in the party, therefore most do not want to go against their King. It appears that in their minds, never mind what the Rakyat says, Samy is more important than anything else in their Pandora.

Samy purported successor, Palanivel does not enjoy widespread support and seen as weak. Only Minister Subramaniam enjoy has some respect among Malaysians. Will he speak up and do something. Nobody thinks he will as he owe both Samy and Palanivel for his post now, both in Cabinet and the party.

So nothing is going to change even if Palanivel takes over. Najib should realise that he can’t rely on Samy’s party. In the hindsight, as suggested by T.Mohan, MIC should just leave BN or UMNO should find ways to expel MIC. Only then MIC will realise that they are nobody without BN’s support.

Apart from this record, Samy will be remembered as the who caused Indian community to split. There was no other Indian political party before Samy took over MIC. Now we have almost a dozen of Indian based political parties and hundreds of Indian based NGO, just because MIC is ineffective. All because of his grip on MIC and his inability to face dissent in his own party.

சோதிடக்கலையும் வானவியலும் ஒன்றா?

தமிழும் சோதிடக்கலையும் பிரிக்க இயலாதது. ஏனெனில் இக்கலையை நமக்கு உருவாக்கியவர் குறுமுனி அகத்தியர்தாம். இவரேயாம் தமிழையும் உருவாக்கியதாக பதிவாகியுள்ளது. இச்சோதிடக்கலையைத்தான் நம்மவர்கள் வானவியலோடு ஒப்பிடுகிறார்கள். ஆனால் அதை நிரூபிக்க நாம் எடுத்துக்கொண்ட முயற்சிகள் என்று பார்த்தால் நமக்கு ஏமாற்றமே மிஞ்சுகிறது.

நமது அடுத்த தலைமுறைதான் இந்த குறையை தீர்த்து வைக்க வேண்டும். எனது இந்த மனக்குறையை ஆதாரங்களோடு விளக்குகிறேன். சோதிடம் தோன்றிய காலம் எது என்று இன்று வரை யாராலும் அறுதியிட்டு கூற இயலவில்லை. ஆனால் வானவியலில் சந்திரன் புவியை சுற்றுவதற்கு எவ்வளவு நாள்கள் எடுத்து கொள்கிறது என்று எப்போது கண்டு பிடித்தார்கள் என்று கூற இயலும்.

இப்போது நாம் இந்த தலைப்பை அலசுவோம்.

வானமண்டலத்தில் இருக்கும் விண்மீண்களை (நட்சத்திரங்களை) 12 தொகுப்புகளாக பிரித்திருக்கிறார்கள். வானமண்டலம் மொத்தம் 360 பாகை என்றால் ஒவ்வொரு தொகுப்பும் 30 பாகை. இப்படி பட்ட ஒவ்வொரு 30 பாகையையும் ஒரு வீடு என்று ஜோதிடத்தில் அழைக்கிறார்கள்

பூமியில் இருந்து பார்க்கும் போது ஒரு கிரகத்தின் பிண்ணனியில் எந்த நட்சத்திர கூட்டம் தெரிகிறதோ அதுவே அந்த கிரகம் இருக்கும் வீடு என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.

சந்திரன்:
சந்திரன் பூமியை ஒரு முறை சுற்றி வர எடுத்துக்கொள்ளும் காலம் சுமார் ஒரு மாதம்.

இன்று பூமியில் இருந்த பார்த்தால் சந்திரனின் பின்னால் ஒரு நட்சத்திர கூட்டம் தெரியும். மூன்று நாட்கள் கழித்து பார்த்தால் அடுத்த நட்சத்திர கூட்டம், அதன் பிறகு மூன்று நாட்கள் கழித்தால் அதற்கு அடுத்த நட்சத்திர கூட்டம். சந்திரனுக்கு பின்னால் எந்த நட்சத்திர கூட்டம் தெரிகிறதோ சந்திரன் அந்த வீட்டில் இருப்பதாக கூறுவார்கள்.

இப்போது அறிவியலை பார்க்கலாம். சந்திரன் புவியை சுற்றுவதற்கு 27.3 நாள்கள் எடுத்துக்கொள்கிறது. எனவே அது ஒரு நாளைக்கு 13.2 பாகை திரும்புகிறது. இது எவ்வாறெனில் ஒரு முழு வட்டத்தின் அளவு 360 பாகை. சந்திரன் ஒரு வட்டப்பாதையில் நம் புவியை சுற்றி வருகிறது. எனவே 360/27.3=13.2 பாகையாம்.

ஆகவே சந்திரன் புவியை சுற்றி வரும் வட்டத்தின் அளவு 360 பாகை மற்றும் அது ஒரு மாதம் என்று சோதிடத்திலும் 27.3 நாள்கள் என்று அறிவியலிலும் கூறுகிறார்கள். இது ஒரு சிறிய அளவு வித்தியாசமே.

ஒரு நுண்நோக்கியும் இல்லாமல் நம்மவர்கள் இந்த அளவு வானவியலை தெரிந்து வைத்திருக்கிறார்கள் என்று நினைக்கையில் வியப்பே மேலிடுகிறது. நம் குழந்தைகளாவது வாய் பிளந்து பார்த்துக்கொண்டிராமல் அதை ஆராய்ச்சி செய்து ஏதேனும் கண்டு பிடிக்கும் நிலையில் இருக்க வேண்டுமென என் உளம் நினைக்கிறது.
